The Role
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Catastrophe Model Engineer with a civil engineering background specialising in vulnerability to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for the development, calibration, and validation of the vulnerability component of Fathom's flood models. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent post graduate or someone early in their career to gain valuable experience in catastrophe modelling and contribute to impactful projects.
You don't need to have catastrophe modelling experience as such, but the ideal candidate will have a very strong experience and understanding or structural / civil engineering principles related to vulnerability by natural perils (flood, earthquake, storms etc.).
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the development and enhancement of flood vulnerability models.
Understand and integrate structural elements of exposure data, including building materials, structure design, and construction codes, into flood models.
Perform data analysis on historical losses to identify important exposure attributes contributing to vulnerability.
Implement findings by developing and maintaining the vulnerability code in the cat model code base.
Collaborate with other team members to validate model outputs.
Prepare detailed documentation of modelling methodologies, assumptions, and findings.
Stay up-to-date with the latest research and developments in structural engineering, flood modelling, and vulnerability assessment.
Support the preparation and presentation of reports and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, or a related technical discipline with an emphasis on natural hazard vulnerability.
Strong knowledge of statistics.
Knowledge of structural engineering principles and practices related to natural risk (flood, earthquakes, storms, etc.) vulnerability.
Experience with data analysis and statistical software (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and independently when required.
Attention to detail and a commitment to producing high-quality work.
Basic understanding of natural perils risk modelling (flood, earthquakes, storms, etc.)
Basic understanding of insurance and risk management principles.
Preferred requirements:
Master’s or higher degree in a relevant field.
Knowledge of building codes and standards related to flood resilience.
Advanced skills in statistical analysis and data modelling.
Python programming skills for statistical analysis, model development and automation.
Familiarity with remote sensing data and techniques.
Experience with catastrophe model use or development.
